BACKGROUND:
Arvel Pembroke Mostyn was born to an average middle-class family in the rolling hills of
Wales, on Earth; April 14, 2324. He grew up on his father's rural farm, always interested
in the bigger towns and cities; and in what lay beyond the boundaries of Earth's
atmosphere.
When Arvel graduated from the basic 12-year public schooling system in Wales, he submitted
an application to the Scientific Institute on Vulcan. His neighbors and some of friends
balked that a simple Welsh country boy could never get accepted to the premier seat of
Higher Learning for aspiring scientists in the Federation.
But Arvel just smiled and replied that "Vulcan's are a logical people. If they see
good scores on an application exam, then, logically, they will accept the candidate, even
if he has shoveled his share of manure from the family barn.".
And Arvel was correct. He was accepted, based on his academic merits. And, after borrowing
money from his father for passage, he soon found himself on his way to Vulcan and the
start of a very adventuresome and sometimes confused life.
After graduating from the Institute on Vulcan, Arvel returned to Earth to take a job at
the famed Starfleet Academy in San Francisco. He became an instructor, for First Year
Cadets, in applied science.
Arvel taught in San Francisco for 6 years, near the end of which he was promoted to
teaching 4th Year cadets, and post-graduates in basic Anthropological studies, and applied
physics.
In 2358, however, he
was offered a position teaching at his old Alma Mater on Vulcan, and acepted readily,
becoming one of the first non-Vulcan instructors at the Institute. This was an extremely
enjoyable and rewarding stint for Arvel, as he had enjoyed his years at the Institute
immensely. And now, he felt as if he were giving something back.
After teaching on Vulcan for 12 years, Arvel wanted, however, to see more of the Galaxy at
large; knowing full well knowledge could not expand in such a stationery lifestyle.
Applying for civilian duty with Starfleet, Arvel was soon accepted aboard the USS
Enterprise, with his old friend, from Acadamey days, Beverly Crusher. |

|
As a civilian
Anthropologist, Arvel served aboard the Enterprise for 3 years, before a special
assignment transfered him, along with a Starfleet First Contact team, to the USS Calgary;
a Nebula class Starship.
After his intial mission on the Calgary, secondary contact procedures with the Mintakans
of Mintaka III; Arvel opted to stay aboard as a civilian scinetist. A descision he was
given cause to regret later.
During the Dominion War, the Calgary was captured by the Breen. Arvel was among the
survivors of the attack, and he was immediately taken to the Breen Capital World, and
imprisoned. After several months he was turned over to the Vorta, on Breen; and put under
a series of "studies" of their own.
These studies basically ammounted to intense physical and mental torture, including
near-lethal exposure to the frigid Breen temperatures, burning with Agonizers set to high
settings, and artificially induced nightmares made by transmitting altered alpha waves
into Arvel's brain on an e-band wavelength.
This drove the hapless welshman virtually insane, and to a near catotonic state. He
stopped speaking, even when beaten severely, and retreated, mentally, to an almost
animal-like behavioral pattern. Finally thinking Arvel had "passed his
usefullness" the Vorta arranged for him to be shipped out to a Jem'hadhar- run slave
labor camp on Occupied Betazed.
 |
After a month or two
in the camp, Arvel managed to escape, however. He strangled his guards with his own chains
and escape into the Betazoid mountains. There he alluded capture, living among the wild
animals in the higher elevations until the planet was liberated by Federation Marines at
the end of the War.
After the Cardassian-Dominon occupation was over, the Marines tried to locate Arvel in the
mountains, but he was too wily, and had no desire to be found. He drifted in and out of
settlements, sometimes stealing clothing or food. It was only a matter of time before he
was caught, however; and his mind was still sharp as ever, and he knew this. |
Stowing away on an
Andorian cargo ship that was bringing relief supplies to the planet, Arvel made his escape
into a life of wandering, and living as a hermit on various planets. He would always steal
what he needed from wealthy families and land owners, and then dissapear into the
mountains, or similar wilderness, providing cover.
Each time, as authorities would get close, Arvel would always effect his escape by stowing
away on some ship or other.
It was in this way, six years ago, that Arvel Mostyn came to the planet that is now known
as New Edinburgh. After some scavenging he managed to make himself a home in the mountains
near Donojii.
And it was Arvel's sneaky methods of survival that netted him a spot at the Donojii
Observatory, under it's illusive Doctor Soran, the administrator. Arvel wandered into the
site as it was being built, and after some time, he and Soran began to talk and to
develope a bond of lose friendship. Soran's skills as a "listener" not lost on
his long life of hardships, Arvel opened up to him. And now, he serves the El Aurian as a
right hand, of sorts, putting his scientific knowledge to good use, as he broods and tries
to overcome the haunting memories of his time with the Breen.
PERSONALITY:
Arvel Mostyn is an interesting an enigmatic individual. A genius, with a photographic
memory, this only served to make the result of the Breen tortures more intence. He
remembers every thing that happened to him with perfect clarity and often relives the
torment in his sleep; awaking in a cold sweat and trying desperately to escape the torture
his mind is forcing him to re-experience.
A gentle man at heart, Arvel has lost a great deal of his "human" side. His
mannerisms are sometimes primitive or almost animal like. He will sit on the floor,
crosslegged, most comfortable eating food with his hands. He has long silver hair, and a
thick white beard, framing two deep, blue-green eyes that still hold the knowledge and
wisdom of his days before his imprisonment.
Indeed Arvel's mind is still sharp, and, if he can find a moment of complete inner peace
he can still apply theory and use his training like the great mind that he is. But his
nightmares still haunt him, and for the most part he is like the qentisential
"hunchback" character of an old Terran monster-movie. He hides in shadows, and
refuses to speak except to those whom he knows and trusts. He is loyal to Soran and will
defend him and his Observatory to his own death.
Arvel's body, still in good shape, is marked here and there by various scars from his
tortures. He is still strong; as a matter of fact, stronger than most human males 20 years
his junior. And he can be a fierce fighter if provoked or threatend.
But, on the surface he
is quiet, and shy, like a small animal, timid. He actually enjoys companionship but inside
he doesn't believe anyone would want to spend their time with him. Always something of a
loner, wrapped up in his work before he was imprisoned, now he carries the scras,
physically and emotionally, of what that time has done to him. He considders himself an
outcast, and assumes everyone else will as well.
Arvel is also very fond of animals and loves to spend time among the wildlife of the
Donojii. He even has a pet, a small Resus Monkey type animal he found abandoned in the
mountains, after some hunters had killed it's parents. He took the animal in, and cared
for it, and it is almost constantly at his side. Arvel calls him "Bilbo" after a
character in a novel he loved as a boy. |

|
A good scientist, and
a wealth of help to Soran; Arvel is begining to slowly readjust, and he has even let a
word or two slip infront of others, besides the El Aurian. But he still has a long way to
go, and alot of healing to do before even the scenic beauty of the Donojii can erase the
tortures inflicted on him by the Dominion.
